EVC Technical Specifications

Since 1998 EVC has steadily moved from one technology to another in an effort to improve our delivery of Erskine Seminary courses. At the present time we are maximizing our ability to deliver EVC courses via the Internet. This technology assists us in several ways to help us accomplish EVC specific goals but also more general institutional goals as well. In particular, by delivering EVC courses in an online environment we greatly enhance the interactive aspect of all EVC courses and make them highly dynamic by making it possible for everyone involved to stay connected and form an online community of learners. This is not only desirable from a pedagogical point of view but also because of accreditation requirements for learner to learner and learner to instructor interaction in the learning process.

In order for us to achieve these desirable and expected outcomes of learning in an online environment, students taking EVC courses online are expected to have the following minimum connectivity requirements in order to maximize the learning experience and meet our institutional requirements. It is the responsibility of the student to determine his/her own connectivity status (dial-up, high speed Internet, etc.) with his/her own equipment and Internet provider.

For MINIMUM performance we suggest a DSL connection with a downstream speed
of at least 300 kbps, Adobe Flash 9 or higher (available as a free download from Adobe.com), Adobe Acrobat Reader (available as a free download from Adobe.com) , a modern  browser such as: Internet Explorer 7 or higher – Firefox 3 or higher, Windows Media Player 11 or Flip for Mac 10.3.9 with Quicktime 7, a properly  maintained and updated operating system, and hardware capable of running the above programs with ease.

For the BEST performance we suggest a DSL connection of at least 3Mbps downstream, the most current Adobe Flash (available as a free download from Adobe.com), the most current Adobe Acrobat Reader (available as a free download from Adobe.com), the most recent Internet Explorer or Safari, the most current Windows Media Player or Flip for Mac (with Quicktime), either windows xp (sp 3)/vista or OSX 10.5 or higher all with the latest updates, hardware in excess of the requirements needed to run the above.

We do our utmost to help the students with their connection needs to the EVC system.  However, we do not support any browsers or operating systems not mentioned above and we do not support beta versions of any software. Because of these new guidelines, EVC staff will no longer make DVD copies of EVC classes.
