The following letter is by Don Kirkland, an Erskine Theological Seminary 1996 graduate and editor of The Baptist Courier. |
Dear Erskine Theological Seminary Alumni and Friends,
I am grateful for the opportunity to say a good word for Erskine—for a school I love so much
My wife and I contribute each month to Erskine Theological Seminary’s Partners Scholarship Program. For Linda and me, commitment to education is an ongoing theme of our lives. She is in her 36th year as a public school English teacher. I began my career as a high school history teacher before God led me into Christian journalism.
I have served on the editorial staff for 32 years and have been editor for 11 years of The Baptist Courier, the official news publication of the South Carolina Baptist Convention. During all of those years, and for many years prior to that, I had longed for a seminary education. My late father, a Baptist minister and associational missionary, always spoke in reverent terms about his theological education and the professors who provided it.
Despite that desire, after years at the Courier, I had almost put to rest my hopes for a seminary education. Then, I learned about Erskine Theological Seminary, which was no more than an hour’s ride from my home in Greenville. I discovered to my delight that I could earn a degree at Erskine while I continued my work. I attended classes on week nights and Saturdays—many at the ARP Center in Greenville and others on the Due West campus.
The day I learned that I had completed all requirements for my Master of Arts degree in Christian Education, I immediately went to the chapel in Bowie Divinity Hall, got on my knees and thanked God for the educational opportunity He had given to me—and for Erskine Theological Seminary, which had made it possible.
Ten years after graduation, Erskine Theological Seminary is even dearer to me. With the passing years, I have realized even more how valuable my years at Erskine were—and are. I thrived in an intellectual and spiritual atmosphere that continues to feed my mind and spirit.
I am serving my third term on Erskine’s Board of Counselors. That has afforded me a much needed opportunity to give something back to my alma mater. Already, my wife and I had made donations to the annual find. But we wanted to do more. That is way we decided to provide financial support to Erskine Theological Seminary through the Partners Scholarship Program.
It is our hope and our prayer that others may benefit from a theological education at Erskine Theological Seminary, just as I have. Through our contributions, we know that we are helping make that possible.
In His name,
Donald Kirkland
