The Setting

When the Berlin Wall came down in 1989 the former Eastern Bloc Countries were open to Western tourists and scholars as never before. Deep in the old East Germany lay the quaint town of Wittenberg where Martin Luther studied and taught and preached until his death in 1546. Professor Harold O.J. Brown of RTS, Charlotte was one of those scholars who took advantage of these travel and study opportunities in Central Europe.

Some 10 years ago Professor and Mrs. Grace Brown began a Reformation Study tour that visited Austria, and the Czech Republic with 3 weeks residence in the Luther complex in Wittenberg. Since that time hundreds of students have participated in what for many was a life-changing experience of learning and fellowship.

From the start Dr. James A. Glasscock has served in various capacities as co-leader, instructor and trip coordinator. In 2004 Dr. Dale Johnson, Professor of Reformation and Modern Church History at Erskine Theological Seminary in Due West, SC, began sharing the teaching duties with Prof. Brown. After a full life of travel, teaching and writing, the Lord took Dr. Brown home to glory on July 8. Drs. Glasscock and Johnson are committed to carrying on the Reformation Study tour in Prof. Brown’s absence. Erskine Theological Seminary will sponsor the tour and offer the class for those who wish to audit as well as for those taking it for 3 hours of elective credit.

Who Should Join the Study Tour?

Typically seminary students and their families have attended this tour. Students of all ages are encouraged and welcomed to attend. Laity are especially encouraged to participate, as we have had several adult couples in the past. This is also an ideal opportunity for teachers and pastors. Participants have the option of taking the coursework for audit or for seminary credit. Erskine Seminary, the seminary of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church founded in 1837, is fully accredited by SACS and ATS. Students from other colleges and seminaries are enthusiastically invited to attended and transfer credit from Erskine to their home institution.

This Summer’s course will focus on Luther and the German Reformation. There will be 2 ½ hours of lecture in the morning by Dr. Johnson. Each participant in the Study Tour is expected to attend these morning classes. The audit fee for the course is $150. Students taking the course for seminary credit will pay the Seminary cost of $310 per credit hour. Erskine Seminary students who wish to take the course for credit will receive a scholarship and a waiver of tuition costs. Students enrolled in Erskine Seminary’s Th.M. degree program, may also take this course for Th.M. credit by completing addition requirements.

Cost

NOTE. The costs MAY change and minor adjustments made accordingly. $3,300 includes airfare, lectures (audit), all lodging and meals in Wittenberg, and some travel expenses and entrance fees to museums outside of Wittenberg. Those taking the course for credit will pay Erskine Seminary an additional, $930 for 3 hours course credit. There is a non-refundable deposit of $300 due with the application (refundable if the applicant is not admitted.) We are also committed to keeping the costs down for our students. As a result of a declining dollar and the cost of travel, we have decided to reduce the trip from 5 weeks to 3 ½ weeks and confine our group travel to Germany. Students will be free on some weekends to travel on their own.
